Venn diagrams were introduced by John Venn (1834–1923) in a paper entitled ‘On the Diagrammatic and Mechanical Representation of Propositions and Reasonings’, published in 1880 in the Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science. Venn used these diagrams to teach elementary set theory, as well as to illustrate simple set relationships in probability, statistics, linguistics and computer science. The first person to use the term ‘Venn diagram’ was Clarence Irving Lewis in A Survey of Symbolic Logic (1918).
